Day 11 -- Medical Exam

Today (Sat.  Yes, I'm a day behind) we had an early start.  We needed to be up, ready and out to breakfast by 8 ish.  I know not that early but earlier than normal for us.  Well, we were still rushing.  We made it to breakfast ate quick.  Elizabeth and I left the boys and headed up to the 9th floor for VISA pictures at 9:00 am.  WOW -- was that fast :)  Our group is so big!! So, the VISA photographer agreed to come and take the pictures at the hotel.  YEAH!!!

Waiting to go to breakfast.

The next event was the medical.  We met in the lobby at 10:00 am to head to the NEW medical building.  Now, if you have adopted from China you know everyone goes to the same place for the medical.  It used to be on the island -- a very small, always crazy place.  Well, the new place is much bigger BUT still crazy.  There was about 40 families all getting this done at the same time.  HELLO -- did anyone hear of APPOINTMENTS!!!  Yes, I know my OCD comes out in situations like this :)

The new place for medicals -- it's only been open 1 week.

Lots of the people waiting like us!

When we arrived we had to wait for our paperwork.  Once I had our paperwork in hand I had to fill out a few questions; Is your child special needs?  Any surgeries or illness?  Also, I had to check all the personal info.  Once your paperwork matches your child you have to go to three different stations for the medical.  The ENT, the nurses station for weight, height, blood pressure, eyes and temperature.  The last stop is the doctor.  I know everyone is thinking --- oh, that's a pretty good medical.  BUT really it's kind of a joke.  The ENT looks in the ears and squeaks something to make sure the child turns towards the noise -- DONE.  The nurses basically tells the kids the answers and what they are going to do.  The doctor is just making sure that the info. on the paperwork is right AND that I know that my child actually has a difference.  REALLY!!!  AND it all took --------- 2 hours.  CRAZY!!!  AFTER the medical we had to go and get the TB shot.  We lucked out -- no line.  Elizabeth was not too happy once she saw the needle -- I held her -- they poked QUICK and we were done.  No crying -- few tears.  Thankfully, we were able to chat with lots of other families and talk about kids and the fun we've had in China.  We all made the best of the LONG lines.

Elizabeth waiting -- and playing baba's ipod.

ENT

Medical exam doctor.  Elizabeth would not talk to her.

The exam --
THEY NEVER CHANGE THE WHITE PAPER UNDER HER -- every one uses the same-- YUCK!

The TB shot.

More waiting.

Our group.!

We came back to the hotel to see MD as he decided to chill ALONE this morning.  We played a bit and decided to go for a walk and find some lunch.  It was such a nice day.  It was BRIGHT and no fog!! YEAH.  It is still chilly but we can see -- so, it's ok.

Walking.
Matt had to be at a paper meeting at 4:00 pm.  MD, Elizabeth and I stayed in the room.  We played cards and ball.  Elizabeth LOVES games.  She is also pretty good at catching the ball and GREAT at throwing it.  After a bit we went upstairs as the maid was suppose to clean.  So, we practiced colors, naming body parts and counting.  She can go to 5 IN ENGLISH!!!

 She LOVES bananas.

After all the paperwork we decided to go out again.  We walked a bit and found a new restaurant -- Sabahs.  It is Malaysia cuisine.  YUM!!!  The best meal in Guangzhou.  FINALLY!!!

At dinner.
We came back to the room and starting gearing down for the night.  Elizabeth colored for a bit.  Matt was exhausted so when Elizabeth went to bed he decided to as well.  MD stayed up with me for a bit but hit the pillow before long.  Matt and MD know we will be shopping away tomorrow and they need their rest to keep up with me.  AND I'm still up because the dinner killed my blood sugar and I'm waiting for it to come down!!!

Elizabeth really did not like the medical appointment.  She was very quiet and to herself.  BUT as soon as we were back she was happy!  She talks about in Chinese to us and laughs lots.  She let Matt carry her and cuddle her tonight.  She is willing to give some kisses but doesn't like too many.  BUT all in all -- after the orphanage trip we have a new girl.  She is just precious -- rambunctious at times but fun.  We are so blessed!

  1. Hi Sarah....I wonder if there's a pool in the hotel? If so I wonder if it might help you all feel better to do some swimming around, and good for lots of bonding with E. Or a massage? Just a thought. E is beautiful, and glad and see to hear all the updates! xo

  2. Boy does this take me back. WE had to go to the American Embassy in London for our physical exams - they no longer do it on Ellis Island. It took an entire day. THe males in one section and all the females in another. First they made us strip and put on paper gowns. My sister was an 8 month old baby - by the end of the day my mother's gown was in shreds and barely covering her. What humiliation. I was 12 - so you can imagine the angst at being naked but for paper that a 12 y/o feels. We were like cattle. You waited until you went to each station to make sure you were disease free enough to be admitted to the U.S. We were very worried that my kidney disease would stop all of us from going but it seemed fairly superficial. One station checked eyes, another ears, another our spines. I think they did blood work also. Fortunately my nephritis, 3 months in the hospital and 2 years on Penicillin didn't keep us out and we were able to get our visa's. What a blessing that God selected me to come to American and meet His Son as my savior.
